Varisu Movie Review
Setting a family drama against an incredibly competitive corporate world Director Vamshi is able to weave an entertaining and engaging story about the misunderstood fathers and sons and conflicting brothers, rivals who are jealous as well as a mother who is worried, a lighthearted romance, pop music and some heavy-duty heroic moments. The film is led by a sparkling star turn from Vijay which transforms mundane moments into entertaining stories.
The story centers on Rajendran (Sarath Kumar who is said to be commanded to look depressed all the time because of his character's terminal disease) who is a business tycoon who pits his children against each other in order to ensure he's the perfect successor. The two sons who are the first and second, Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam) respectively, keep eyes on the chair of their father and slavishly follow their father's wishes and desires however, the third son Vijay (Vijay) is different of opinion about his ways of doing things and chooses to stay out of the way. When Rajendran discovers that he's counting his years, he begins an opportunity to view his boys as what they truly are, and ultimately, he chooses Vijay to be his replacement which leads to the two other sons going to war and even worse becoming part of his fierce adversaries Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). Is it possible that Vijay prove himself a worthy varisu? Can he bring his family back together?
Varisu starts off in a somewhat shaky way with scenes that are somewhat unrelated to the context and a bit cold. The mother-child relationship isn't quite as strong and the scenes with Vijay and Jayasudha are reminiscent of the air of a commercial on TV. The thing that keeps us engaged during these scenes are the parallels we can read into them based upon the real-life conflict between the film's main character and his parents.
The set-up creates the impression that we've been dropped into the world of a Telugu adaptation of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, where instead of the gangster-themed backdrop the film tells a story set against a corporate backdrop. There are some scenes that are quite boring, like the scene in which the two characters fall out Vijay and Rajendran that occurs early in the film. Even the intermission isn't the most rousing of moments.
The film changes gears in the second part, and Vamshi achieves sixes and fours, with massive moments that combine heroism and comedy equally. Vamshi also punctuates emotional moments with comedy and makes sure that things don't become too melodramatic. However, He doesn't hold the line when he's determined to get his viewers' tear ducts. This film is very self-aware. Family and relationships drive the story and the movie is awake enough to realize that family relationships can be harmful, but old enough to recognize that sometimes, we need to make the most of the resources we have when it comes to our family.
There are some blunders that are the track's romantic aspect (Rashmika is the arm candy in the film) and less than formidable villains. The fact that even an actor of Prakash's size and stature isn't able to turn an antagonist into a powerful adversary to the hero demonstrates how weak the characterization. Perhaps, the director believed that the conflict that involved Vijay and his brothers back to the fold was sufficient. The writing style used in the scenes is very broad, which diminishes emotion from scenes, particularly in the beginning. The pace, too, is erratic and Vamshi even has songs that are not needed and a lot of fight scenes that make the movie an unintentionally long film.
However, he compensates for all this by bringing his star. Vijay is in top form, with hilarious monologues that make us burst into laughter as he exchanges funny counter-arguments with Yogi Babu (who is hilarious, after a while) and delivers puns that are self-referential (a scene that involves an office meeting is hilarious!) and displaying genuineness in order to get us to purchase the emotional moments.
