We Have a Ghost Movie Review
When Kevin (Jahi Di'Allo Winston) as a child in his teens, first encounters Ernest (David Harbour) the ghostly figure who lives inside the attic at his newly constructed house, no one believes him. Then, his elder younger brother Fulton (Niles Fitch) and his father Frank (Anthony Mackie) start creating YouTube videos based on Ernest's appearances within the home and the family is an internet phenomenon. The internet is awash with all sorts of bizarreness after the Internet explodes, bursting with the usual bizarreness ranging from requests for rights for ghosts to crazy weirdos who declare their affection for him, and from creepy images to abstract ghost contests. Soon, the internet is attracting the attention of a secretive government agency. The whole time Kevin and his next-door neighbor Joy (Isabella Russo) are the only two who truly want to help Ernest achieve the peace and closure Ernest deserves.
This is a concept that has been beaten to death before. In an attempt to inject something new, director and writer Christopher Landon throws in every odd scenario in the film. At first, there's some excitement that can be enjoyed, however then the script begins to fall apart and the script stalls to never being able to get back in the right direction. We don't get to know the actual motivation behind Ernest's circumstances, and the subplots continue to pop out like ghosts of the past. None of these have any sense and only contribute to the film's endless time that is filled with cliches such as Jennifer Coolidge's character Judy Romano - a popular ghost TV host. There's also a suspicious former federal agent Doctor. Leslie (Tig Notaro) is looking to capture Ernest with motives that are as shady. In truth, the plot becomes ridiculous and absurd after a certain point it's hard to know about who's doing what and what the motives are. It would be good with lots of laughs and some interesting horror motifs but director Landon is determined to give us a tangled story that drags for a long time without any real reason to do so. The plot also goes into emotional overdrive. He tries to get us to feel guilty for the ghost, but the absence of conviction is more evident than the ghostly presence in the house. But the only aspect that is shining through (literally) in the film is the CGI utilized to depict Ernest's ghostly image. It's very high-tech and innovative in the manner it's done. This is the reason it's possible to endure this spectacle to the close of the film. David Harbour looks tired and exhausted. If the goal for performers was to make the viewers smile and cry during this two-hour film, then everyone fails. This is due to the script that doesn't allow them to perform in the way they are expected to be able to deliver.
"We Have a Ghost" begins on a positive note but it is gradually plagued by the absence of a solid plot and convincing. The result is a ghostly tale that is pleasantly entertaining but mostly empty of soul.
